At Acton Dental Associates of Acton, Massachusetts, we want our patients to be comfortable and at ease during their visits to our office. Drs. Eric M. Block and Erich Kronenwett believe in providing sedation options to help patients overcome their dental anxiety while visiting the dentist’s chair. This includes nitrous oxide sedation. Let’s take a look at some frequently asked questions about nitrous oxide sedation.
Drs. Block and Kronenwett describe nitrous oxide sedation, also referred to by some as “laughing gas,” as a form of conscious inhalation sedation used in dentistry to help patients feel relaxed and calm during dental procedures. Our dentists can work on your teeth while you unwind thanks to this colorless, odorless gas combined with oxygen, which is supplied through a little mask that fits over your nose.
Once the patient inhales the nitrous oxide-oxygen mixture, it quickly enters the bloodstream and immediately reaches the brain. There, it produces feelings of relaxation and euphoria, which alleviates any anxiety or fear a patient may have. Nitrous oxide also has pain-relieving properties, making it an effective form of sedation for dental procedures.
Nitrous oxide sedation is considered safe and effective, with minimal side effects. The dentist easily adjusts the amount of gas administered to achieve the desired level of sedation. Once the procedure is complete, patients are given pure oxygen for a few minutes to clear their system of nitrous oxide. This allows patients to drive back to work or home after their appointment, something that cannot be done with other types of sedation, such as oral conscious sedation or general anesthesia.
While nitrous oxide is generally considered safe, some precautions should be taken before administration. Patients who have respiratory problems or certain medical conditions, such as COPD, may not be considered appropriate candidates, so it is vital that patients are open and honest with their dentist before this sedation is administered. Our dental team can decide if this type of sedation is appropriate for you based on your medical history and current state of health.
