What are dental implants?

Dental implants are tiny posts that are placed directly into the jawbone where a tooth root used to sit. Once in place, the implant bonds with the jawbone and tissue to create a stable foundation for either a crown, bridge or denture. Dental implants are the closest restoration to natural teeth.

The dental implant process

We are here to walk you through the entire dental implant process from consultation all the way to your new smile. While everyone’s tooth replacement journey is different, most treatments can be broken down into these main steps.

Consultation

The first step in the process is determining if you are a good candidate for dental implants. Our team will perform a comprehensive evaluation of your mouth, discuss your options for tooth replacement, and go over what you can expect out of treatment. It is during this appointment that we may also recommend certain preparatory treatments such as bone grafting to help with the success of your dental implants.

Surgery

The dental implant surgery itself is a straight-forward outpatient procedure. The implant is placed into the jawbone by making a small incision into the gum tissue. Once in place, the gum tissue is sutured, and healing can begin.

Osseointegration

Following the placement of your implants, your mouth will begin the process of healing. During this time, the implant will fuse to the jawbone and soft tissue to become fully integrated. This healing time can last anywhere from three to six months.

Once healing is complete, you will return to the office for abutment placement. These tiny connectors are what allow the implants to support your final restoration. Impressions are then taken and sent to a lab for fabrication of your final crown, bridge, or denture restoration.

Placement of final restoration

Once your restoration is ready, you will return to the office for placement. After the restoration is attached to the abutment, you will leave the office with a fully restored smile that can last a lifetime.

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Smile confidently – Unlike removable restorations, dental implants are firmly held in place so you don’t have to worry about them moving around or coming out.
  • Eat your favourite foods – Dental implants restore most of your chewing power, allowing you to eat just about any food you want with ease.
  • Preserves jawbone – Once in place, the implant stimulates the jawbone to prevent deterioration.
  • Prevents future tooth loss – Having a strong jawbone can prevent remaining teeth from becoming loss and falling out.
  • Long-lasting – Unlike other restorations that will need to be adjusted or replaced, dental implants are designed to last a lifetime.
  • Successful treatment – Dental implants have a success rate over 95%.
